| | | Re: Lucky Newt Without a doubt it's a female palmate newt ,note the unspotted throat and a paler underside than you would normaly find in a smooth newt,I would release it a.s.a.p at the point of capture.

Oh and as always gorgeous photographs | A number of years ago when living in our previous home, we used to have a large white bucket on the patio near our back door. It had about an inch or two of water in it together with a few dead leaves, and then one day a Great Crested Newt appeared in said bucket (I think it was autumn time). There were some ponds around a hundred yards or more away, but how the newt got into the bucket is something of a mystery, as the bucket was about 18" high and had a lip on the rim. We left newty in his bucket and a couple of months later he disappeared. Clearly a good climber |

| | | Re: Lucky Newt Glad I was right about it being a palmate! I hadn't realised the females have the raised ridge along the centre back, that's why I thought it might be a male not in breeding condition. |

| | | Re: Lucky Newt Many thanks for the ID confirmation folks! I've re-titled the images already uploaded. Here's a few more shots of her...
She's now back in her pond, wondering why her modelling career was suddenly cut short!

And here she is back in her home...
Notice how clean and tidy it is?

| | | Re: Lucky Newt She is a beautiful little creature. I always thought I'd never met a palmate newt, but now I am convinced I must have overlooked them. Is it best to look for the webbed hind feet and the orange stripe under the tail? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
