messing around in the garden today, taking time to watch my pond and its inhabitants i noticed some unidentified spawn on the bottom of the pond.fishing a bit out, it seems larger and more opaque than the plethora of frog spawn i have in the shallows of the pond and was most certainly completely submerged ........has any one any ideas about what may have laid it?
we have frogs (a plenty) and today i saw at least 3 newts walking about on the bottom of the pond. |

Frog spawn is always in a clump, toadspawn is alwaYs in strings and newts lay eggs singly on plants. It sounds as if yours is that of a frog. You will have to wait to confrm the species though.
With the various intro`s around you never do know what you may find in a place like Dorsetshire. |

I would have to say frogs spawn if in a clump maybe from a very big frog  |

thanks guys, but my query/concern is that this clump rather than being semi submerged is completely underwater (a depth of 6" - 10")
frog mistake? |

hmmmm...your probably right.
maybe Douglas Adams was wrong and it isn't the dolphins who run the planet????? hahahahahhaa
ponds frozen over again...hope that bubble wrap around the eggs is doing its job! 
I know, I know, I know...they know what they're doing and have been through tougher winters than this...nature will find a way! |

If it's slightly opaque and the black dots have or are turning white then there's a chance this clump has been frozen whilst in its normal subsurface position. |

yeah, that had crossed my mind...would it have then sunk?
i know some of the topmost spawn on the semi submered clumps arent going to make it as theyre frosted right over!
b*$%$!!y winter...the only good thing going for it is that i havent yet seen a single sluuuuugg! yuk! |

I've had slightly frosted clumps with a few "whites" that still float but a heavily frosted clump will sink.
Don't get too excited about the lack of slugs - they'll be back!  |
