| | | Re: Any Frogs Spawn in South East England Like that of Frog123, my pond froze again last night (temp down to -4.2oC) and the anguish suffered by those still awaiting their first spawn should be tempered by the fact that my spawn has now been frozen on three separate nights since laying on 27/2-1/3. Although I am hopeful that at least some of the lower layers of spawn may still be viable, Frog123's warning about freezing effects is concerning . So, your spawn may be a little late but maybe better than early spawn that has been clobbered by the elements. Survival rates should become apparent in a week or so, last year my spawn eggs went from dot to commas (indicating growth of embryo) 10 days after laying.

| | | Re: Any Frogs Spawn in South East England Well, its the 5th March....and still not a sign of any amphibians in my pond (just been out with a torch again).
Mind you, my pond was frozen yet again this morning....so maybe my Kentish frogs are just being a bit clever and careful....
Either way, Posie....can you pop round and have a word with them for me? and work your magic!...

| | | Re: Any Frogs Spawn in South East England Well, my torch batteries are running out, I had 8 frogs all nicely paired up for the last three days but still no spawn. Tonight I noticed that one of the females is missing some fingers off of her front legs and that there is a single frog and 3 pairs. I do hope that doesn't mean there has been a casualty.
It has been sunny and quite cold today, and I wondered if the temperature is deterring the females from laying, if not the males - they are clinging on and do not seem to be giving up anytime soon. There is one really small male with an enormous female that looks very fat in the stomach region .. you've got to admire him!!
Does anyone have any ideas how long they will stick together before they get down to business? |

| | | Re: Any Frogs Spawn in South East England Keep the faith peeps, later may be sooner (to mangle a similar phrase) in that those of us gloating about abundant spawn now may not actually have any live taddies until next Spring, such has been the hammering the spawn has taken from Jack Frost's nocturnal nastiness.
