| | | Frogs and frogspawn Has anyone seen any frogs or even better still any frogspawn. Its usually around the 6th March ish for my pond near Leeds and I suspect possibly later if the cold weather persists. My own pond shows no sign of life whatsoever and is unusually slimy after the ice and snow, almost algae-like, no sign of newly aroused frogs marching across roads and lawns either.
No matter it will all eventually happen. Actually its quite nice to have a more traditional proper winter, the Snowdrops are only coming through now and the Daffodils are miles off, whereas in recent years many have been out by now! |

Saw some daffodils (cultivated not wild) in full bloom a few days ago. |

| | | Re: Frogs and frogspawn In reply to the enquiry about frogspawn. Its co-incidence as I came on line to report that I have the first frogspawn in my pond today, 16th Feb 2010.
I have been getting concerned as last year my first spawning was the last day of January and I had seen lots of frogs active in the pond well before that date. I can only assume that the colder weather is to blame ( we had snow, thats only happened where I live once before in the 11 years I have lived in this part of Cornwall. )
What is a concern is that there is usually a lot of froggy activity in the pond prior to spawning, and despite the water being crystal clear, I have seen no frogs or toads at all so far, so the numbers must be well down, Im just hoping that milder weather and rain may encourage more to move back and get down to business. |
