| | | Frog/Toad Houses? Is a half broken terracotta pot placed by the pond a good shelter for frogs/toads?

| | | Re: Frog/Toad Houses? Its better than nothing, but It would be far better to have a long pile, or several logs around the pond these would provide greater shelter as well as attract invertebrates for food. |

| | | Re: Frog/Toad Houses? i have a mixture of a log pile, the bark that came off when splitting logs for fire wood and also a tile construction made from a row of ridge tiles and each end covered with a tile,
each area has its own particular main visitors, the tile is very popular with toads
the inside of all of these hibernaculums is lined with a mix of moss from the lawn and dead leaves, the leaves break down over winter and the moss is still there come spring, to be replenished later in the year

| | | Re: Frog/Toad Houses? Evening CC,
I echo Dan's suggestion RE a logpile. It would offer a greater degree of shelter than a pot as well as providing an insect food source - and incidentally a home for the invertebrates the Frog can't see! Plus if you're into fungi you'll get to grow some of them too...
If you go down this route use logs if different species and sizes. Pots could be incorporated as well though, as in my experience they provide a home for Slugs and Snails, more food for the Frogs... you may also encounter hibernating Newts or even Slow-worms later in the year!
Take care,
Jason |
