| | | Toads calling I have just been out in the garden and three different areas of my garden have frogs or toads croaking, calling..
I thought this was a mating thing the males calling to let other males know its their territory and to let the females know there is male waiting and is ready for mating..
I thought they only did this in spring..
Is this normal for this time of year.
What's going on

What's going on | I commented last Autumn in a WAB post, on this behaviour by frogs, - no one came up with a definitive explanation. Anyway I've noticed the Autumn croak over a number of years, though the intensity of the calling is nothing like the Spring mating serenades. The different locations also seems to be a feature - the mating seranades always seem come from the mating pond or its margins rather than dispersed around the garden.

| | | Re: Toads calling I heard yesterday on a quiz program that Natterjack Toads can be heard by others several kilometres away, hence their name.
Just thought I'd throw that in... |

| | | Re: Toads calling I thought i was going mad and my daughter said i must of been dreaming .....as for the last 3 weeks i have been hearing frogs calling in my garden ...it has allways been very late at night when i am in bed around 12-1am ....it is away from the pond and seems to be coming from the patio area and when i have had a good old nose the next day ...nothing ...and there is not anywhere around there for them to tuck themselves away for winter ...and no sign of them in or around my pond i did go outside late last night with my torch to see if i could see any activity....and saw just one very thin little frog my 2 toads are underneath the rabbit house where they usually team up ready for winter and no sign of them out and about either (it was raining and as they showed video footage of active and feeding toads on Autumnwatch ) so i thought mine might be out )but nothing lazy little devils ....i do miss all the springtime night action ....sadly onlysaw a few slugs and snails out they never seem to dissapoint me !!!!!!
