| | | my first Adder ! Hello,
On the 1st October I was out looking for insects at Yaverland, IoW when I saw my 1st ever Adder! About mid-morning, it was sunbathing near the cliff edge, remained motionless just long enough to turn on the camera and then was away, snaking into the grass. You can see the tail end has just twitched.
From size and colour - about 35cm, reddish brown - it seems to be a young female.
Thanks,
Rob

| | | Re: my first Adder ! hi
well spotted. i think you are right about it being a young female.
around this time of year they start returning to hibernation sites which are often communal. it might be worth another look around the area if you want to see more, either over the next week or so or early next spring.
cheers

| | | Re: my first Adder ! It does seem like a young female. The younguns are so difficult to sex at that age, but the lateral spots are not very defined, which points towards a lady. Great time of the year to spot newly born adders, but still alot harder to spot than their adult counterparts, so very good find. |

| | | Re: my first Adder ! I remember searching Lulworth Cove for adders and walking away disappointed. Then I spotted a mother telling her child off. He was very close to an adder and didn't seem to reaalise he could get bitten.I managed to take a photo. I reckon children are great at seeing things that we miss. Unfortunately they can also be noisy and scare everything off. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
