Unidentified frog

I spotted this frog high up in the Lake District Fells yesterday about the 2000' mark, it was cold wet and windy and the frog seemed reluctant to move though it did make a couple of jumps after allowing me to photograph it. I have had a quick search but cant find anything like it making me wonder if it is a rarity or an oddity of nature. Any assistance would be appreciated by this new member to the WAB fraternity.

Hello Summonedbyfells, and welcome to WAB. I would guess (but I'm not an expert) that this is an odd coloured Common Frog. The ones in our garden tend to range from almost yellow through to a very dark brown, although I have never seen one looking as orange as your handsome individual.

I have never seen one as orange as that. Mine was more red and I was told it was due to the breeding season. This photo was taken 01.07.2008

Thanks Jonners, Yes I thought he/she was a bit unusual I have another picture of it which I'll upload to the Gallery, good to know we are extending the range of it's recorded variation. Cheers.

I also found a red frog in my garden recently. I took photos of it on my cell phone. Unfortunately, I have never uploaded pictures to WAB, having read that it is a tricky business so I cannot show you! But yes, it was pretty rufus!

The common frog is a very variable species ranging from blue, grey through to red, yellow.

Thanks to everyone for such prompt and helpful replies, I can see that this community will be very useful but I will try not to tax everyone too much! I do have a moth picture that has been puzzling me for sometime though...
