Snake Bite

It won't have been a grass snake as they don't have fangs, so would not have left a mark with two punctures like that.

Also an inch apart sounds quite a distance for an adder bite - I would think their fangs would be closer together than that, so a bit of a mystery.

As the other peeps have pointed out, it is very rare for a Grass snake to strike open mouthed when grapped, let alone when not. Not only that, they do not have two prominant fangs that would cause such a wound if they did. I think this rules Grass snake bite out for certain. It certainly sounds like an Adder bite without envenomation, so you are lucky. It could also be a non native species that is very much, in this day and age, a possibility. The fact that you say the bite marks are an inch apart makes this one very very big Adder, or indeed, a non-native as I have never recorded a berus of that size. Very good luck on both acounts.

Could you post a picture of the wound with a ruler right next to it?
