| | | Common Toads and (how do I attract Newts)
We get loads of Common Toad spawn in our pond and usually a large amount of tiny "toadlets" all over the garden. This one was in the middle of the grass heading back toward the pond, or maybe it saw me coming and turned around to "leg it" albeit in a very slow fashion. It is great to see them emerge from the pond and scatter to the four winds. One question I have about them is do the young ones go back to the pond as it seems or once they have left the pond find shelter until they are big enough to return to spawn themselves? Also I would love to get Newts in our pond but we live in a housing estate a long way from any natural Newt habitat, we try to keep the pond as nature friendly as possible. The dimensions of the pond are quite small though, 6 by 6 and at the deepest 3 or 4 feet deep. Would it be wise to try to intorduce Newts and if so how do I go about it?
Thanks, Nick. |

| | | Re: Common Toads and (how do I attract Newts) These toads will most likely leave the pond and live in the gardens of the estate feeding up until they are large enough to breed. Regarding newts they would live in a pond that size but the housing estate is possibly a blockade however you do find them in urban environments so they could potentially move in. Never move amphibians if you pond is suitable they will arrive on their own if they are not there there is a reason which could be negative for them. |

Maybe one day | I got common newts breeding in mine 3 months after I installed it but they were in the garden already as were the toads and frogs from the surrounding neighbours ponds.
Maybe you could create more habitat I have long grass and wild areas around the garden.
