rehoming common newts

The place I work has a man made pond with common newts. The building is being closed and will probably be used for a new housing development.
i have a pond with many frogs and was wondering if I could relocate some of the newts to it to ensure at least some survive, or would the developer have to keep the pond - there are only common newts in it and not great crested .

or would the developer have to keep the pond - that would depend on any stipulations made in the planning permission or from any points raised in the Ecological Impact Assessment done beforehand.

Catch as many as you can,bung some in your pond,release some in a damp area,just in case the pond gets filled in.They'll sort themselves out from there.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have just spotted a toad by my pond so hopefully it will also suit the newts. It started as a fish pond but the wildlife moved in

Will the goldfish and newts be OK together or are they not a good mix?

I would love some Newts shame I didn't see this post earlier, would have gladly rehomed some if they were in danger of course

the gold fish will eat some of the tadpoles, but other than that there shouldn't be too much problem unless you have very large fish

You should NOT move newts if there are no newts in your pond so far then maybe the habitat is wrong for them so would not survive.
get in touch with these..
Fish will eat the newt eggs and efts..

get down off your high horse Kayleigh, of course I would NOT!! move Newts. If their habitat was in danger by development I am sure they are quite capable of finding a new home on their own.

I was giving some advice in general its not just habitat you can pass on diseases as well if you provide everything the newts require then they would be there already as you have none then there is something wrong and its not for them.
I only have the newts interest at heart..

Thanks for your replies. Have just seen a dead frog in works' pond so won't be risking passing diseases to my healthy frogs and toad.
I have pond weed -oxygenating,a small fountain and waterfall, pebbles around the edge with a woodpile at the back of the pond as well as a larger one in another area of the garden. The garden is totally enclosed and in a semi rural area. Can you give advice on what I could do to make it a better habitat that would appeal to newts?

Hi Dawny welcome to WAB,

Try to leave some grass long around the edges of the pond and places that are untouched..
dig a hole in a border at the back and fill it with rubble then get a piece of upturned turf and lay it over the top newts will use this to hibernate in..
I have woodpiles all around the garden especially at the back of the shed and the side of the greenhouse..
I also have a green corridor with cover from shrubs all the way from the pond to the back of the shed.

Thanks I'll give it a go and hope some are adventurous enough to find there way to my pond. Will the enclosed state of the garden - concrete based fence panels or brick walling to all boundaries except for the gate make it impassable to newts?
