Grass Snake with toad

My attention was drawn to rippling on my pond this afternoon and discovered it was a very active grass snake swimming around with a toad firmly fixed around its head as if hitching a lift. I assume the toad thought if he let go he'd be a gonna. Is this usual behaviour or have I just got a very quick-thinking toad?

I think Toads are breeding now and have heard amorous frogs will latch onto fish so maybe he latched onto the snake.

Oh, if that's the case I gave him too much credit - hope he survived but can't imagine he did.
