Just thought to look in "Fauna Brittanica", it lists as common names "ask (Scotland, Northern England); askel/ aspel (Shropshire); asker (Lancashire); eft; evvet.
Good to know my ears and memory have some life still left in them.

Playing Devil's advocate, I would not describe newts as being obviously scaly, and the yellow belly could be indicative of a male common lizard |
