Great Created Newts For Sale At Garden Centre

I went to a garden centre today and found Great Crested Newts For Sale. I was on the understanding that they we're an endangered species, therefore you couldn't

•Kill, injure or capture them;
•Disturb them in any way
•Damage or destroy their habitat
•Possess them or sell or trade them in any way.



I'm a bit Confused.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to sell them too. It's illegal to handle wild ones or disturb them without a license.

Give the RSPCA a call 03001234999, they can check if they have a licence and quote the law regarding this for you

You may have a police officer who's duties include "wildlife crimes" I know in Lincolnshire there is one. You could try contacting your local station or wildlife trust for their details.

hello, the newts for sale look like japanese fire bellied newts {i have kept many of them}.

Ive seen italian and danube crested newts for sale in the UK, which is another possibility

I also think they are Fire Bellied Newts, loads of people are selling them, i was looking at some today at our local garden centre.

Yes as afew members have said, these are NOT great crested newts. No cause for panic! Although I would imagen it would be wise to point out to the shop that it would be a good idea to change the name of them. Also it show's their apparent lack of knowledge which is a worry.

What if some well-meaning customer should buy these believing them to be Great Crested Newts (Native UK species) and releases them into the wild....

Apart from the legalities of the Trade Descriptions Acts if they are wrongly labelled....
