| | | Lotsa Newts Whilst removing leaves from my pond, I found 13 Newts. I belive they are
all Smooth Newts. Last year I counted 6
I'm not sure if I will get any babies as I now have 3 small goldfish in the
pond.
Does anyone else have loads of Newts in their pond ?

Goldfish tend to eat newt eggs so it is unlikely that you will have anymore. Fish and newts do not mix unfortunately.
I have a largeish pond which is solely for wildlife and I have about 40 newts of both types (smooth and common). I've heard that if you get the great crested ones then they eat the smaller newts - you can't win can you! |

| | | Re: Lotsa Newts We have both smooth newts and a few residual fish from earlier times in our pond and the newt population grows every year, so some of the little ones clearly survive.
When we had to move our log pile at the end of last summer we found around 60 newts of various sizes in it and rehomed them all carefully in the new pile. It is a good thing for the newts to have a log pile or a pile of stones fairly near the pond that they can hide in over the winter. It doesn't have to be right by the pond - ours was about 20 feet away and they had no problem finding it. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
