Dave | Dave, it was between the rhodadendron (or however you spell it) tunnel and Island Mere hide. Go through the "tunnel", past a bench, 30 yards to slight bend in path. It was at the base of a tree on left at this bend. |

i've never heard of this, but - as i have recently learned - if you know what you're looking for you can use the shape of the tail.

Nice find! I know there are melanistic forms in North Wales, but I have never seen any down South. I'm fairly sure they are more common in Northern regions, as the black colouration would be more efficient for thermoregulating in colder climates.

An update, mostly for Dave or anyone going to Minsmere. According to RSRB Minsmere's website black adders have been seen on several occasions in the last few days, mostly near the Bittern Hide |

I still haven't made it to Minsmere in the last week, too may other commitments at the moment, maybe next weekend.
I'd really like to see one of these snakes, getting a pic would be a real bonus.
