Tadpoles!!!

I will try and get a picture tomorrow.

It is funny, I have this batch of spawn which is hatching now, and I have some that was laid on saturday. I think these first ones were just the early risers!

that's great news fairy. Mine are just about the eat their way out, they've been wriggling a few days now, however, the warm sunshine seems to be accelerating the process. I may have mine swimming freely by the weekend yayyyy.

I've still got a couple of tadpoles from last year. I wonder if they'll turn into frogs this year.

I had a few left over too aemonn, around 5 that I could see were held back a year. This year I can id one of them as it's smaller still than the frogs from 2 years ago.

Just had a look today to see how our frogpawn was doing and it looks like we are going to get 1 or 2 tadpoles

Hopefully some of them will make it to adulthood

Congrats to everyone who has spawn and 'poles!

My spawn has been present for 2 weeks now, when can I expect hatching?

Also, does anyone has any stats on the general success rate and / or mortality rate of frogspawn in a small pond? I just think it'd give an interesting insight into the breeding strategy of amphibians.

I seem to have a good hundred little blobs, I wonder how many will make it...

I think if you don't have dragonfly nymphs or fish, then plenty will make it. I noticed in my pond over the last summers, that some will metamorphose quickly, whereas others from the same spawn remain as tadpoles without legs well into September. Its to do with overcrowding. Apparently the ones that are changing excrete a hormone that retards the development of others.

As a kid I remember having a tank of tadpoles outside, many of which overwintered as tadpoles and matured the following spring!
