| | | Juvenile reptile sightings Hello, I was doing a reptile survey today and found a fantastic small grass snake. It was no more than 25cm long and slightly fatter than a pencil. I concluded that it must have recently hatched this year but I always thought they hatched a little later, and the good condition of this chap looks like he's been feeding fopr a while.
Has anyone else seen any juveniles of this year?
Could the heat wave we had have speeded up their development? I know for captive snakes that the temp can have an affect on the length of time before hatching.
All thoughts welcome and a picture will follow tomorrow |

| | | Re: Juvenile reptile sightings Hey Kerfoot,
That's last years hatchling. New grassies are 14 - 20cm long, 25 - 30cm after a year. Lovely snake though. Here in west Dorrzett I've found new viv. lizards since the middle of July, baby adders from the 11th of August. No grassies or slow worms yet though. It's worth remembering that neonate reptiles grow incredibly fast in the period between birth and hibernation - the first viv. lizard neonates have doubled in size almost in 5 or 6 weeks, and compared to recently born babies look very different.

I go walking around Blackbush Airport a bit and only seem larger Slow Wroms this year - one being taken by a Magpie !
Anyone seen any advance in Adders? |

| | | Re: Juvenile reptile sightings Hi there,
First time I've posted on the Forum, but thought you may be interested in a picture of a juvenile adder which I saw in Redesdale area of Northumberland at the end of August.
Although I saw several adders over the summer, this was the only juvenile.
Great site, will try to post whenever possible.
Regards,

| | | Re: Juvenile reptile sightings So far, I've only seen 1 neo Grassie but quite a few Juvenile Slowworms at one site, no Neo Adders as yet, but a nice sub adult Adder and a adult Viv. Lizard today.
