| | | silver aesculapian? In the summer of 2006, there was in my pond near Cheltenham Glos a snake resembling an aesculapian snake, behaving like a grass snake but about 5ft long, silver in colour, the underside I forget.
Today I saw a similar very young snake of the same description, but about 3 inches long, with a pronounced black line along its spine. Can anyone say what this may have been? In our garden there have been a family of common lizards, but these appear to have been seen off by a slow-worm which has invaded their sunny patch. I suspect that a former resident of my village, who was a reptile enthusiast, may have released both lizards and snake, as a green lizard was evident here about four years ago. |

the three inch long animal sounds exactly like a baby slowworm and as you have adults in the garden then i'm pretty sure that's what it will be.
difficult to say what the snake was although based only on probability then grass snake seems most likely. there can be some colour variation in grass snakes and they can sometimes reach five foot or more in length. the remote possibility of it being an escaped 'exotic' can't be ruled out of course. shame you didn't get a picture really.
lucky you...all this literally in your back yard .
