| | | Possible Natterjack toad Walking along the Cefn Sidan beach this morning I came across this Toad. I thought it was an unusual place to see a toad as there is no water nearby. Knowing nothing about Toads I looked to ID it and I read about the Natterjack.
Can someone ID it for me please as I think that they are quite rare. Sorry about the Toad being covered in sand, it was blowing a gale this morning.

| | | Re: Possible Natterjack toad I think its just a common. I cant see a yellow stripe on the back and it seems to ahve a reddish tint, which Ive seen often in common toads. Still anice find on a beach though! |

| | | Re: Possible Natterjack toad Interesting, the location is good near the beech they are often found near the sea. The fact its totally covered in sand makes it alot harder to ID. Often the yellow line is faint or in some cases not there and they also can have a reddish tinge. The way to tell them apart is the paratoid glands behind the eyes, in the common toad they are oblique from each other, in natterjacks they run parallel. Which to me suggests the common toad, also im unaware of any natterjack populations in south wales. They are commonly found away from water but not commonly found on the beech. |

I found an interesting article on a Jersey website: Quote: |
The Common Toad made the Jersey headlines in an unusual story during February 2007. Dozens of toads were found hopping around on the beach near the Dicq Slip as the tide came up. Residents rescued many of the toads which were rehomed in local gardens. No-one is certain how the toads came to be on the beach. Did they get lost on the way to their mating ground, or did someone illegally remove them from their land? Either way, it is clear that local people are fond of their crapauds - and there was no problem finding new homes for them.

| | | Re: Possible Natterjack toad During holidays on the East coast as a child i remember seeing common toads on the beach at night. They were foraging in the rotting seaweed for maggots! often hundreds of them. As the caravan site was surrounded by drainage ditches there was a good supply of fresh water habitat for them to breed. i have often seen toads in such ditches all around the u.k coast
