| | | Amphibians face extinction? There is so much depressing news to read regarding wildlife and the environment and here is the latest ....
It has been estimated that more than half of all frogs, toads and newts living in Europe could be driven to extinction within 40 years as climate change, diseases and habitat destruction take their toll. BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Bleak outlook for Europe's toads Amphibians facing a wipeout by 2050 - Times Online
Not good news at all .

| | | Re: Amphibians face extinction? This is sad news indeed. This year I have found to be quite good for the frogs, newts and toads from my pond. I've come across frogs in the grass too in numbers. Possibly because it's been a wet year. The warm Januarys though are encouraging early spawn which can be frozen later on in the Spring and killed. |

| | | Re: Amphibians face extinction? Just a note from me which may or may not be of interest - a little while ago I moved from my Housing Association flat, where I had a mature garden with a very small but established wildlife pond. The garden was well stocked with frogs, newts and toads. The HA sent some of their boys round and totally wrecked it all - smashed the pond, filled it with rubble, and tore out all the mature plants. It seems this is their policy whenever a tenant moves out - but what a pointless and destructive act of vandalism this is! They could have waited until a new tenant was found before making a decision and taking such drastic action. I assume all HAs and Local Authority housing departments do the same. What hope does our wildlife have when Government bodies adopt such attitudes? |
