| | | Re: Are snakes easy pets? I've never kept a snake as a pet myself, but I guess the best approach would be to do as much research into snake care as you can before you actually buy one. Why don't you find out where your local specialist reptile store is, and discuss it with someone there? They may be able to recommend a suitable species, and then you could learn all about that particular snake before you start keeping one as a pet. |

| | | Re: Are snakes easy pets? Generally speaking, snakes are easy to keep.It depends to some extent on what type you are thinking of, as space can be an issue for the larger types.
I have been keeping corn (or rat) snakes for years and they are very low maintenance.Providing they are kept in a clean, humid environment, fed as regularly as the individual animal requires(there are no fixed times or quantities in my experience) and exercised they will be fine. The handling is debatable,as you get very little feedback from a snake, however,I work on the idea that handling them as often as possible must at least provide them with something different to do,as well as given them some degree of muscle workout...Check the web for info and if you decide to go ahead with keeping a snake or two,I'm sure you will enjoy it. |

| | | Re: Are snakes easy pets? My son was promised a snake when we moved house. Luckily I took advice from our local veterinary practice which is quite large and has it's own reptile specialist. She made the point that although snakes are generally very easy to keep as pets they are quite boring. She recommended that my then 10 year old son get a dragon, either water or bearded, instead as they are much more fun. This was excellent advice. The beardy enjoys being handled, is given regular baths and can beg for crickets. Perhaps it is copying the labrador! In either case the vet was also able to recommend a reliable local supplier. So, maybe, your local vet could be a good starting point for you too! |
