| | slow worm pets I've had a pet slow worm now for about 4 days i believe its a female and its got a pile of grass to sleep in, mud all around it, a slab for sun bathing and about 2 or 3 slugs or worms a day to eat but ive only seen her eat about once so far do u think its a problem or i just never see her eating. Cause i put food down by her go away come back and its still there and do they need a bowl of water or do slugs provide it all for them. sorry im going on for ever but i need to know quickly because i want best for her. Any response will be great |

| | | Re: slow worm pets This will not be the answer your looking for but i would strongly recommend you release this slow worm, they arnt appropriate pets and its not great to take wildlife and keep it captive. One of the reasons it may not be eating could be down to it being unhappy in the tank. Reptiles are hard to look after as it is and you opening it upto to the risk of all sorts of problems. Slugs and worms alone dont make up a slow worms diet also there are alot of other factors that you will struggle to re create in captivity. If you really want the best for her, release her and keep visiting the site maybe with a camera and appreciate them in the wild where they belong. Welcome to WAB. |

Welcome to WAB. | I agree with you, I think you just about covered it. Please release this animal into its natural environment where it belongs. I'm sure you want what's best and has Dogghound says they're not easy to look after. They are protected by law but I would like that protection extended to cover taking them from the wild. The problem with taking them captive is that you're removing mature adults that should be breeding in the wild.

| | | Re: slow worm pets I would let the poor thing go,noticed you have a thread on wanting a snake!! I do hope you do the proper research before you get one,I am sure you will get a lot of advice. As has been said this creature belongs in the wild,it is not and should never be looked on as a pet.....
welcome to WAB,ellen

| | | Re: slow worm pets hi there
slowworms really are amazing aren't they. i completely understand why you would want one as a pet. it's always an effort for me and my children to release any we find...they're so beautiful i feel like i could hold them forever! however, as others have pointed out, no matter how dedicated and well meaning you are you will never make the animal as happy as it would be in the wild so the kindest thing for it would be to let it go. dogghound is absolutely right though when he suggests taking time to get to know the animals in their own environment through observation and photography will be even more rewarding in the long run.
i know very little about keeping reptiles as pets but a quick google produced these results. there are others as well. Reptile Forums UK - Care, Pictures, Classifieds & More http://www.captivebredreptileforums.co.uk/ Reptile :: Keeping :: Information - Reptilekeeper.co.uk
if you are sure you want to keep a reptile as a pet (and this applies to your other question about snakes too) then captive bred animals are the way to go rather than wild ones.
sorry if this isn't what you were hoping to hear but good luck. i'm sure you'll do the right thing .
