Worried about this toad's eyes

I found this toad hiding under a bridge - it was very well camouflaged indeed! It's eyes looked very red as you can see from the pic. Do you think they're ok or have they been damaged in some way?

This pic of the same toad should better illustrate my concern about the eyes. For example, compared to the eyes on other toad pics in the WAB Gallery.

The eyes dont look great there is abit of discharge, what we are seeing are the toads eyelids raised, this could be due to an infection. Im sure it will clear up on its own. Toads vary in colour as do their eyes its common to have bronze eyes like this one which im sure are not redder than then normally are.

Now you've pointed it out I can see exactly what you mean - and you're spot-on of course - the eyelids are raised. They were like that all the time so for some reason he/she was holding the lids closed - probably as you suggest due to an eye infection.

I hope you are right and the problem will clear up (quickly) on it's own.
