| | | Sudden Death Hi All,
As A New Member To The Site I Wish I Didn't Have To Post This Thread!
Over The Past Few Days I Have Found 10 Adult Frogs, 2 Juvenile, And One Newt Dead In And Around My Ponds.
My Garden Consists Of A Large 3500 Gallon Koi Pond With More Than Adequate Filtration, This Is Oxygenated Via A 15ft Stream Which Is Also Pumped And Filtered,
I Also Have A Reasonable Sized Wildlife Pond Into Which I Transfer Any Amphibians When They Appear In The Koi Pond, For Fear Of Them Being Eaten By The Koi!
I Have Not Put Any Treatment Into Either Pond In Recent Months!
I Have Just Observed Something Very Strange Indeed, Whilst Cutting My Grass An Adult Frog Made An Appearance Onto My Lawn, After Fetching My Camera And Taking Some Great Photo's Of This Subject, Sat With His/her Mouth Open, It Hopped Into The Stream, Here It Sat Again With Its Mouth Open Until I Returned Aprrox 5 Mins Later To Find It Dead!
Could This Be Some Sort Of Virus Being Tramsmited To The Amphibious Wild Life In My Garden?
Incidentally I Have Not Lost Any Fish !
Has Anyone Encountered Something Similar?
Thanks

| | Re: Sudden Death pxl8,
I am as puzzled as you are there!! I usually cut and paste into word to perform a spell check! maybe this had something do do with it?
I would not have noticed, very observant!

I cant see any signs of ulceration/redness on the frog that hopped onto my lawn some of the dead have been found amongst plants and are dried up others have been around the rocks at the top of my stream and would appear have been dead in the water for some time, likewise I have found two amongst the lilly leaves in my koi pond. I have just found another out of the pond, this frog has its mouth open and appears to be gasping!
What would the redness/ ulcers be indicitave of?
cheers to you both!

Possible Red Leg disease which affects amphibians but it's not that common iirc. |

Frogs readily take in toxins through their skin and are easily killed,if there are no red leg symptoms keep an eye on your fish they are susceptible to toxic chemical spray drift also

Welcome, BTW | The capital letters are because the text was all typed in CAPITALS then it is reverted to Capitals. I had the same happen to me earlier

| | | Re: Sudden Death nightshade,
Thanks again for your thread, I have enquired with neighbours and no body has admitted to spraying any garden products etc!
I have observed a couple of frogs (alive) in my small pond, they seem ok. I have also removed two dead from the koi pond but I suspect they have been dead for sometime and have recently floated to the surface.
incidentally I too am from the south west (plymouth to be exact).
cheers
