| | | Newt nabs baby caterpillar Watched one of my newts "chase" down a baby caterpillar and eat it
I don't often get to see the newts actully eat stuff as they tend to lounge around on leaves and stuff or hide during light times
anyway one of the medium size newts located a baby caerpillar and started to follow it nose to tail, literally it was virtually touching the cats' rear end, i'm guessing it was checking out its scent trail to see if its good to eat??
it followed it like that for about 2 - 3 inches (really fast chase scene lol)
then as the cat' turned side ways on and over a twig the newt lunged a bit with is mouth open to try a capture but ended up getting the cat' stuck to its nose, a funny couple of seconds where the newt just opened and closed its mouth trying to grab it
eventually the newt knocked it off its nose on a stone then made a more succsesful lunge and started to swallow it down, it did turn the cat' around for preferation to swallow but i cant remember if it swallowed it head first or tail first
onnce it had swallowed the cat' enough to close its mouth it scurried away to is main living place under some damp wood

| | | Re: Newt nabs baby caterpillar caught in the act again !!
saw the biggest of the newts with a woodlice three quaters swallowed
i guess that explains why the woodlice are fewwer and one newt is bigger, think s/he must have a higher taste for woodies that the others
why would it be that one of the newts has stayed small and scrawny while the others have developed quite well
is it that some speicies just produce runts?
