| | | Lizards in water Yersterday, in Anglesey, I came across a lizard swimming about near the edge of a river. It seemed perfectly healthy. I assumed it had strayed there from the nearby sand dunes. A few metres on there was another one. Is this normal? I have never heard of water-loving lizards in Britain. But then, my knowledge of lizards is very scanty. The location was Aberfraw, just 200 metres from where the river meets the sea. In fact, the water would have been pretty salty I assume. |

| | | Re: Lizards in water Yes, I can see why you suggest this but I am certain they were common lizards. We lifted them up and examined them carefully. |

| | | Re: Lizards in water Hi - found this on a lizard website:
Common lizards are competent swimmers and will use this as a means of escape if necessary. They swim by tucking their limbs against the sides of their body and wriggling fast through the water at the surface similar to the marine iguanas of the Galapogos.
Hope this helps - it's interesting at least. |

| | | Lizards in water : . Chinese Water Dragon When nervous or frightened the lizards will take refuge in the water. They are strong swimmers and if necessary, can remain submerged for long periods of time, up to 25 minutes. They will usually live in groups with one dominant male and several females. The male is territorial, and will attempt to drive off other males.
