| | | Newt ID help please? Is this a common newt or some other type? The ones in my garden are common newts and look different to this... It was about 3 inches long.

| | | Re: Newt ID help please? Saw it at Priddy Mineries on the Mendips in Somerset. Just googled smooth newt and it comes up as an alturnative name for common newt.. is it the same species or different? The ones in my garden are definetley different looking and smaller |

| | | Re: Newt ID help please? Common & Smooth Newt are two names given for the same Newt, scientificially named and spelt Triturus Vulgaris. Vulgaris or vulgar- latin for common.

| | | Re: Newt ID help please? I agree, this definately looks like Smooth Newt, the only other it could be confused with is Palmate Newt, but the female is quite pale with small spots, wouldn't be surprised if you also have them in your garden pond too. |

It could be a palmate female, but I would need to look under its chin.
