| | | Is this a baby frog or toad? There were dozens of these little fellows on the concrete path about 50 yards from a large pond. Size varied between 10 to 12 mm. They hopped which made me think they were frogs, but I'm not sure so would appreciate confirmation. I am also interested as to how you can tell at this size?

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? It's a toad. General shape & you can see the warts, plus taods always look grumpy to me. I find toadlets often jump too. |

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? Deerstalker and Dogghound - thanks for the id and info. I did think they looked toadish but was confused by the hopping as I thought only frogs hopped.
They all seem to be moving in the same general direction so any idea where they are making for - in general terms I mean . I'm guessing that they've just left the big pond (located about 50 yards away) and are making for somewhere specific?
If they keep going in the same direction they'll come to the bank of the Great Ouse located about 200-250 yards from the pond. To get there they have to pass through a ~40 yard concrete floored tunnel under the main A5 dual carriageway - do you think they'll make it through. It's dark and cool in the tunnel but not noticably damp.
Other than the river there is just meadowland with cows and sheep.

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? They will leave the pond and live in the undergrowth and only go back to the pond to breed. |

You might be interested to see this posting of a wasp sitting on the head of one of the baby toads. It's really quite cute. http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...tml#post301577
