| | | Is this a baby frog or toad? There were dozens of these little fellows on the concrete path about 50 yards from a large pond. Size varied between 10 to 12 mm. They hopped which made me think they were frogs, but I'm not sure so would appreciate confirmation. I am also interested as to how you can tell at this size?

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? Deerstalker and Dogghound - thanks for the id and info. I did think they looked toadish but was confused by the hopping as I thought only frogs hopped.
They all seem to be moving in the same general direction so any idea where they are making for - in general terms I mean . I'm guessing that they've just left the big pond (located about 50 yards away) and are making for somewhere specific?
If they keep going in the same direction they'll come to the bank of the Great Ouse located about 200-250 yards from the pond. To get there they have to pass through a ~40 yard concrete floored tunnel under the main A5 dual carriageway - do you think they'll make it through. It's dark and cool in the tunnel but not noticably damp.
Other than the river there is just meadowland with cows and sheep.

You might be interested to see this posting of a wasp sitting on the head of one of the baby toads. It's really quite cute. Unidentified wasp sitting on baby toad's head

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? Both toads and frogs hop too Bruce. Regarding Natterjack Toads its unlikely as it lacks the colouration and yellow stripe also very restricted in the UK.

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? Deerstalker - Thanks for your reassuring comment. I would estimate at least 50 young toads were making their way through the tunnel when I left. I did consider trying to collect them and carry them through but I felt there was a better than even chance that I'd tread on a few in the process. Fortunately there are 5 tunnels under the road and this one is rarely used by pedestrians.
dampflippers - I'll look out for your pic - thanks.
Kayleigh - You had me worried there for a while. It would have been quite sad if my "cute pic" had such a sinister meaning behind it. Whilst I accept that parasitic wasps have as much right to exist as any other lifeform, the method used by Lucilia bufonivora (thanks Dogghound) it is rather gruesome by human terms.

The toadlets I saw recently were a completely different colour -
is that to do with the area as they look very read and the first toadlet looks very well camoflagued. I'm assuming they're just colour variations of the Common Toad? |

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? zail - thanks for posting your toadlet pics . Yes their colour variation is interesting isn't it. There was quite a variation with the individuals I saw over the last two days - some were much darker and some were more grey than bronze.

| | | Re: Is this a baby frog or toad? Whilst we're on the subject of frogs and toads, can anyone help me with some info? I live next to a fishing-lodge and every summer we get tiny, tiny little froglets/toadlets hopping around our garden. They are a dull brown colour and only as big as your thumbnail. They come out more when it's been raining. Which are they please? |

Tiny toads tend to be black and crawl, they do in my garden anyway. |
