| | First adder at last After quite some searching I have finally seen my first adder in the UK Of course, I nearly trod on it . It was in scrub/heathland in East Bucks. In the end I saw 3, and there were probably quite a few more there too.
Very pleased that my effort was rewarded, but a little sad that they are doing so badly in some areas.

| | | Re: First adder at last What a lovely snake, it looks MASSIVE.
They do seem to do well on North York Moors and around the wild areas around York. Always a thrill to see them, when I was a child I was mortally afraid of them, we used to go to Central France for holidays and everyone there was convinced that they were
1: Clever
2: Dangerously venomous
3: Very agressive.
What a shame, I spent so much time in places I would love to have explored, but rarely ventured off the tarmac! |

| | | Re: First adder at last Good pics. They're great Snakes and I love photographing them regularly along with my children in Wales. My daughter almost stood on one too when she was eight and she was well within strike range but they're so reluctant to bite, it just looked then slithered off. It took me a while to get to sleep that night though.

I've only ever seen one but it didn't hang around for me to snap it - I've been on the look out for another one ever since ....... |

| | | Re: First adder at last glad you caught a cracking piccy of it Rob . Though when I first saw the thread I was hoping that Galanthus had spotted one!
What i'd give to be Gwyn Ap Nuth handling two in my arms. Or at least one on Kodak!

| | | Re: First adder at last I guess this is a female? I think it was about 50cm. The other two I saw were too quick for pictures. This one let me creep very close and hold the camera "in its face". I wouldn't have wanted to get any closer once I saw how fast it was. Do adders strike like a cobra?
It also hissed which I never expected from an adder. I see why they have a bad reputation as their expression is so mean-looking. |
