| | | Re: ID please! It looks to me like a Palmate Newt, there are two parallel rows of dots along the tail and the colouration suggests it is a male even though you cannot see the filament at the tip of the tail. The males also should have webbed hind feet but you can't really see them in the picture. Females are duller brown with less bright colouration compared to the males. Hope that helps. |

| | | Re: ID please! I'm torn! Having done a bit of reading, it seems that the webbed feet and filament of the male palmate become less evident when they leave the pond. The spots are finer too - there's still the red/blue colours along the bottom lof the tail that I tend to associate with smooth and the photo makes the newt look more robust like a smooth but now I'm bending towards it being palmate too....... |

| | | Re: ID please! hey i'd say a male palmate, if you look closely at the back foot, it does look a little darker and larger. also you can see that the chin is not spotty.
he's also a cute little newt. wish i had newts in my garden. |

Tbh, I couldn't see that the back feet were webbed, but was erring on it being a male palmate meself. Regarless I'm well chuffed!
Pretty sure I spied a Smooth Newt in me pond last night too!
