Re: Adders

I imagine their must be lots of places in the New Forest. Just found a site talking about a survey in 2005 where they observed them under corrugated iron from Black Gutter Bottom to Picket Post. See the NARRS site for more information on the Survey Monitoring Project

Shatterford & Yew Tree Bottom are other good places for Smooth Snakes on the Forest.

Hi Al.

I think only two colonies were ever known from the New Forest & both of these were gone by 1950.

Re: Adders

There's a few places in Hampshire where you can find Smoothies, several areas in the New Forest(well quite a few actually) plus over in the Woolmer Forest area in East Hampshire. The only place I know for sure where the Natterjacks are also in the Woolmer Forest area.

Re: Adders

We get alot of Adders near where I live, there's a wild life reserve and adjoining forestry plantation, the soil is very sandy and there's alot of Heather which they seem to like, the Forestry has walks through it and over the years there have been a few dog fatalities after they've been bitten by them.

Re: Adders

Went looking in one of my newer local hotspots. Even carried around a dead Shrew for a few hundred yards and you think I'm joking

Didn't find a Dickie Bird

Re: Adders

Just come back yesterday from Dorset heath near Wareham and the South Devon coast after 3 days looking for Adders. Sun was out after a cool night, no dog walkers, 8-9 AM. Saw absolutely no Adders, only a few Sand Lizards a Slow Worm and the tail of a Grass Snake. What am I doing wrong?

I know they are not common in Herts, but anyone got any suggestions for Beds or Cambs?

Re: Adders

I think it's still quite early unless you're in perfect conditions (Demicav ) I didn't find any when I went looking last week. All I saw was a dead Shrew

Re: Adders

I thought they'd be out and about by mid-May! But if it is still early then I don't feel so unlucky/foolish not to have seen any in what looked like great locations. Will just have to go back in a few weeks.

Re: Adders

Myself and a friend headed to a reserve called Decoy Heath in Berkshire last week, its a heathland habitat with lots of iron sheets. We found one Adder which i photographed and added to the gallery. Apart from the Adder we found 1 Slow Worm : )

That's good to hear, I've been checking under some iron sheets on a local heath regularly over the past couple of months, I've found quite a few Smooth Snakes and Grass Snakes but as of yet no Adders, hopefully one will turn up under there eventually!

Re: Adders

Found quite a few Adders this year, infact ive seen more Adders this year than i have Grass Snakes, although im starting to find Grass Snakes more now, had a interesting find today when me and my bud (Arvensis) went for a quick look for Adders at a site which is not far from us, we only found one there, a juvenile basking on top of a tin, got attacked by lots of annoying ticks which wasnt nice.
Then we went to an area we have been studying fior a while now, so far we had found Slow Worms and not so long ago we saw our first Common Lizards, the area looks ideal for Adders and there is no shortage of small mammals for them so we have been hoping to find a Adder there eventualy, and today we got what we wanted, Arvenis spotted a large female Adder basking on some corrulene, she slithered underneath it and after we got our cameras focused i lifted the refugi and got a nice supprise, another Adder already under it, this was a male so i got my first pic of multiple Adders, and we were happy as thats another species we have recorded at this site, we dont know if they have already been found there.

I wouldn't say it was early, they should be well out of hibernation by now. Locally, my first sighting of Vb was on the 8th of February.

Guy F - is that 'local heath' near Norden?
