| | | Where are the frogs? We've had frogs in our garden pond for the past ten years or more and quite often, after rain, we had to watch where we walked to avoid treading on them. This year - nothing.
No frogs in the pond and haven't seen one in the garden and our next door neighbour has the same story. We have also noticed that the frog population and amount of frog spawn in the nature reserve at the back of us is also heavily depleted.
Has anyone any idea of what's going on please? Though there are no fish in the pond ( these having been removed two years ago), there is plenty of aquatic life in the form of fresh water shrimp type creatures. Plenty of submerged aquatic plants and about 20% coverage of duck weed.
I could always guarantee finding frogs under the rocks in the waterfall, together with the occasional toad, but now the whole lot is sterile.

| | | Re: Where are the frogs? Might be useful to know where you are in the country (roughly) - these things tend to be regional: certainly no problem here - lots of old frogs, lots of spawn, now the elders have gone and the youths returned while the tadpoles are growing nicely! Quote:

| | | Re: Where are the frogs? Where abouts are you Yorky. I have a couple of frogs in the pond but not as many as last year. I had more frog spawn this year too. Maybe the frogs are just hiding, try going out at night on a damp evening with a torch.
The frog and toad population have been hit by viruses and red leg. If you find any sick or dead amphibians in large numbers contact these.. Froglife - conserving native frogs, toads, newts, lizards, snakes |
