| | Newt Problems!!! I've got a large pond that contains lots of frogs, toads, stickleback fish, and until recently, Newts. A couple of weeks ago hundreds of tadpoles hatched, and since then, I've been seeing less and less newts, until now I havn't seen one for ages! Please help, I hope they havn't all died or something... |

| | | Re: Newt Problems!!! They were probably smooth or common newts, these leave the water soon after breeding and hunt on land at night, concealing themselves under stones logs or wherever they can find a damp secure lair

| | | Re: Newt Problems!!! Hello!
welcome to the site!!!
I wouldn't worry too much about your newts as two things have probably happened. One is they are less obsessed with breeding and mating and more careful about hiding away (they tend to be most active at night - try looking for them with a torch at night) and they are actually terrestrial and only come to the pond to mate or to keep moist if it's really dry and as it has been rather tiping it down recently, they have probably ventured back out into your garden to eat little slugs and beasties for you!! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
