| | | Re: frogspawn You can use anything that you can find...as long as it doesn't stick too much to the spawn and it needs to be secured so it doesn't blow off in the night. I have got a couple of corrugated iron sheets over the end of the pond with a brick on it - not very pretty! But I've used opened out compost sacks, an old sheet, anything to keep the pond from freezing and to cover the spawn |

| | | Re: frogspawn Hi doglover...
You posted the same sort of query as I have. I made a very small pond last year and it's doing well. I rescued Mr and Mrs frog just over a week ago from the road where they definitely would have been squashed by a car. Didn't know where they'd come from ( there was a pond nearby that had been filled in last year) so put them in my pond about half a mile away. 2 or 3 days later I had a big clump of frog spawn YIPEE! but am worried as it's got cold again..If the pond totally froze solid would it kill the spawn?

| | | Re: frogspawn I'm not sure what would happen if the pond froze completely, but we had a layer of ice appear over our small pond a couple of times while the spawn was developing and it hasn't done any harm. |

| | | Re: frogspawn I use a piece of double ply bubblewrap (about 6"x7") and place it over the spawn at night when it is likely to be frosty. That way it keeps the spawn frost free and last year didn't do any harm. But that said I despair at this cold weather at this time of year I really do. To be honest I've had it up to here with this cold weather, if not for me, for the frogs.
