| | | Adders and Common lizards Hi all,
I have found the other threads on Adders very interesting!I am determined to get a good look at one this year, and hopefully a photo as well. I live near Little Haldon heath in Devon, where there are a LOT of Common lizards. I have managed to photograph these. I am under the impression lizards are a prey item for Adders, therefore is it safe to assume the area in which I am observing the lizards will also be home to Adders? I have only REALLY tried to find Adders today,so I am of course not to disapointed that I have as yet not seen any!If anyone lives in my area and they know of a good spot to find Adders, could they please let me know? Any answers to my questions would be great!Cheers,

| | | Re: Adders and Common lizards ello Dave, glad to hear you have healthy lizard site in your neck of the woods but just because they are there doesnt mean there WILL be Adders, however the chances are good as Devon is certainly a good spot for these beautifull creatures. I find coming across a spieces your not sure exist on a particular site so special, so keep looking, and keep us posted. Dont forget to take care and enjoy. ps, get out sooner rather than later , with the new ferns and grass coming through they will become a lot harder to find.

| | | Re: Adders and Common lizards Hi all,
you wont believe what happened today!!I have been working on a large house which sits a stones throw from Devon sea cliffs. Its a fantastic spot with views of Peregrines,Buzzards,Kestrels and the odd Sparrow hawk.....sometimes all in one day! The view over Lyme bay often shows Dolphins and Porpoises etc.Basically the Flora and Fauna is fantastic!Anyway,I was walking with a work mate down the steep path to the Beach(which is part of the grounds of the house.......it shouldnt be allowed.......unless I own it!)I said to him "I am determined to see Adders this year", he replied "Well there you go, there is one!". I caught site of the Adder as he said it.....about 2 feet away!Got a good look for about 30 seconds, but not long enough to get my camera out of my shoulder bag:-( I am out again the weekend, and I am going to get further advice as to Adder locations from a friend in the know.I will be posting competition winning photos soon......................:-P Cheers,

| | | Re: Adders and Common lizards Hello Dave. Some thoughts came to me while reading your posts, so I am going to venture my opinion in my past experience. Adders tend to be in certain localites. Like little communities. So you could have a whole grassy forest, but they could only be in one spot, even though the whole place is suitable for them. I know a path called the adder path, I named it because I could go down there on a warm day and find up to eight of them bathing. But now, the adders have forsaken the path for some unknown reason. Snakes I find are hard to go out and find instantly, unless you have your eye on a certain bit of corrugated iron. But that is cheating to me. Lizards on the other hand, they can be found just like that *snaps fingers*. They don't seem to get abroad so much as snakes do. For this reason - turning back to your question about safe assumptions - I find that snakes are unpredictable to find. I almost always come across them by accident, and not always in the places I would mark them to be at.

| | | Re: Adders and Common lizards Crikey, you lot are searching for them and I would happily never see one again my life. The cornish cliffs were the last place I saw one. Place called Rinsey. It was not a nice experience and I (how can I put this) nearly made buttons. They terrify me. They seem to be just where I don't want them to be. This was in that soft grass that sinks neath your feet. But sure adders like to bask and will feel movement so would be visible initially but tend to do one if they feel footsteps so waiting to see one seems logical. Not to me though. If you do happen to see one please proclaim it as my share too. I could happily never see another snake again
