| | | Spawn Hi,
Firstly, what a great site.
I hope you can help me.
Last year I created a frog friendly pond, with nearby rock pile, log pile, and marshy area. After nearly 15 months I have yet to see any amphibian visiitors. I know these things can take a while to develop so was happy to leave it another year or so. Whilst looking on the internet the other night I found a site by the Greater Manchester Police who claimed it was perfectly OK to collect frog spawn (common frog) from the wild, and to also transfer between ponds.
This has been the opposite of what I have always thought. If this is the case, could I not request some spawn from someone else and put it in my pond?
Does anyone have a viewpoint on this?
I do not want to break the law, or cause harm to any wildlife. Or, is it perfectly fine to get some spawn from elsewhere, and if this is the case, from where? |

| | | Re: Spawn i hear transferring spawn can cause problems such as disease introduction like the red leg disease.
Having said this i have done it before without problems so i say go for it! |

Check out this link http://www.marinebiology.co.uk/frogs.htm which should help you.
I introduced spawn to my pond about 15 years ago. The frogs return each year and many stay within the pond and surrounding area. This year saw about 80 frogs at any one time.
Even if you don't introduce spawn they will find it!
Good luck

| | | Re: Spawn Wow,
Many thanks for the great response.
So now I think i will try and introduce some spawn, the next question - where can I get some?
Any ideas?
I live in the Essex area, but fairly near to London?
Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Thaks once again |

| | | Re: Spawn Hi Darren,
Have you tested the quality of your water? If the conditions are right you should get somthing spawning in there. We built a pond last spring and Toads have spawned in there this year. We also have about 10 newts in there at the moment. We have lots of plants that help keep the water clean. Do you have fish in your pond? fish eat spawn. Our pond has no pump or filter just plants. Hope this helps. |

Many thanks for your message.
We do not have any fish. just plants. Have also made the surrounding area frog friendly.
Suppose I just have to wait.
Thanks once again. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
