| | | Re: Pregnant Frog/toad or bloat? Thanks for your help That's really sad - the pond has fish in so I can't add salt, and the frog has now disappeared so I can't catch it and give it some salty water. Will keep looking out for it.
As for the pond water, everything else living in there is healthy, so I wouldn't have suspected an infection, but will look at what treatments we've got for the water. |

Although this would mean keeping it in a tank without salty water as well. DONT ADD anything to your pond treatments etc. Only apply to individuals, this applies to fish as well. |

We have seen several other frogs in the garden (not near the pond, they like the chicken pen!) and they are all fine, so hopefully it's just this one. |

| | | Re: Pregnant Frog/toad or bloat? While we're swapping Frog pics, I'll show you mine! I snapped him yesterday. I first met him a year ago when I was making a new border layout. I disturbed his home under a slab, so I built him a spacious appartment under 2 slabs. I had a peek yesterday and he's still there!

| | | Re: Pregnant Frog/toad or bloat? Hi
I have a small water feature and an amateur, established pond.
Both have frogs and an occasional newt visiting.
I have noticed bloated frogs in each!
Off to use some 'Pond Clear' and renew the barley straw stocking.
I'm sad to think they might be ill.
There are some dramatically different coloured ones.
I must have a look to make sure eg the black markings aren't evidence of disease. Will try and get some photos.
Great forum! |

I have a very large Toad that lives in one of my greenhouses, i leave a water tray on the floor as there is no room on the staging and time and time again swimming amongst the plants having a drink is the Toad, he or she usually scarpers when i enter and hides either under the Tomato growbags which are raised up off the floor slightly or in one of the bags itself on top of the compost, havent seen him the last few days.

| | | Re: Pregnant Frog/toad or bloat? This is an old thread to revive, I just saw 2 toads in my garden this afternoon, on ontop of the other. I initially thought they were mating but they just stayed like this for a good hour or more and I've just noticed from the photo that the one underneath looks awfully bloated. Do toads get pregnant? I thought they just laid eggs. Does anyone know any reason why this guy is so bloated? I'm worried he may be ill and that's why he's getting such big hugs from the other one. What do you think? |

| | | Re: Pregnant Frog/toad or bloat? These are both Common Frogs in 'amplexus' - male on top, female underneath. The female looks bloated because of the unlaid spawn inside her, which she should lay within the next few days. When she does, the male will fertilise the eggs. In the meantime, he'll just hang on to her back and wait - there's no actual mating. If there's a pond in your garden or nearby, they should be heading there. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
