Sand Lizard

Went down to Wareham, Dorset today and found a couple of sand lizards, one escaped but I got a pic of the second.


I also found this pair of grass snakes under a piece of plywood.






Quite happy with my day, I have never seen a sand lizard before, and only seen grass snakes at a distance,so I was well happy to get the pics

You've had a better day than you realise. the right hand snake in the 2nd photo and the bottom photo are smooth snakes!

Really? Nice I thought they were a pair of grassies as they were sharing a hidey hole.

Cor! Brilliant Za. Great shots. Very nice finds. Worth travelling a bit for those.
Get any other heath species down that way-odonates/grasshoppers etc?

I saw very few dragons at the part I went to, quite a lot of grasshoppers though,there is also a large common there as well, I havent been there yet,the Wareham area is well worth a visit, possible venue for a meet next year methinks

I saw a kingfisher as well within five minutes of getting off the train, my second in a week as well as in a lifetime.

I think I`ll put my smooth snake in for the Gallery, my first attempt, havent had anything worth putting in before

Nice one Za, I'd been watching Sand Lizards on one of the heaths near Wareham earlier in the year, but I've not been to see them recently.
And great shots of the Smooth Snake, that's one I've always wanted to see but I've still never managed!

Is it usual behaviour for grass and smooth snakes to share a home/shelter?

Oops, just read that smooth snakes eat other snakes, including other smooth snakes, looks like the grassie might have been dinner and didnt realise.

Super photos, how lucky you were to see Smooth snakes as well. Dorset is brill for all our native reptiles. Looks like your trip was well worth it.
