| | | Is it usual for frogs to call at this time of year? Usually our pond is teeming with frogs in the spring, and we often have frog spawn as early as January in mild winters. This year we had a fair amount early on, most of which hatched successfully. After the poor summer we've had, the weather has markedly improved here over last couple of weeks, and last evening just before dusk, I heard frogs calling in the pond. There were atleast 4 of them. I just wondered if the sudden improved temperatures and sunshine has sparked a second mating season? Is this usual for this time of year? |

Frogs can be heard calling throughout the year - in my ponds they were calling (and mating) in November & December. It's possible that they could be mating for a second time this year, that would be unusual but not unheard of, although I think it's unlikely simply due to the law of averages.
It seems that amphibian behaviour as it relates to the seasons is changing rapidly. Here in Kent many species don't hibernate proper any more, simply becoming more torpid in spells of extreme cold. Certainly the frogs & smooth newts in my ponds are active all the time the air temperature is above freezing. There is no proven reason for this at the moment though.
Short answer:
