I have seen a few Newts over the years but never the spawn. It's prob hard to see if it's in the weeds. |

henrya | All the pond plants that have leaves are still at the bottom of the pond. My pond was still frozen over until about a week ago. The only plants showing are millfoil and Japanese rush neither have flat leaves. I read that newts don't mate until April so there may be time for my plants to grow by then. Fingers crossed.
I also read that common newts are now protected by law as their numbres have dropped. I hope I can do my bit to help them out. |

| | | Re: What does Newt Spawn look like Yes, it's a bit early to find newt eggs. They will lay on other things, but they'll probably wait for your plants to grow. You could get a piece of black plastic about 8 x 12 inches (a piece of bin bag would do), Make a cut every half inch from one long side to about an inch from the other. Tie one corner with a short piece of string to a stone and put it in your pond. Then you have an artificial pond plant for the newts to lay on!

| | | Re: What does Newt Spawn look like smooth and palmate newts eggs are about 1.5mm in diameter in a 3mm capsule usually misty yellow or cream, laid mainly on the underside of submerged plant leafs which is curled around the egg, or on water grass. Great crested eggs are about 2mm surrounded by a 4.5mm capsule of jelly and are generally a lot brighter in colour. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
