| | | Huge snake!! We found this huge snake skin whilst looking for a lost cricket ball this evening.
It belongs to a female Grass Snake and measured a massive 35 inches in length and it had the head end missing, if complete it would mean that she is over 3 feet long!!
We have always had a good population of Grass Snakes in our garden and they are very welcome residents, I would really like to catch up with this big lady when I have a camera with me, she'd make quite an image.
Matt (FourwingsJNR) with the skin. |

| | | Re: Huge snake!! Never realised they could get to that length Steve. Always though of them as being around eighteen inches long at the most, but then again I don't know much about snakes. Your garden must be an ideal habitat for them.

| | | Re: Huge snake!! I'm really hopeful that she will be fairly easy to find, we have two ponds that are loaded with Frogs and Grass snakes love Frogs, a snake this size needs plenty of food so if I keep my eyes on the ponds.... well thats my theory anyway
Roger - I knew they could get quite large, but over 3 feet long is massive, just a good job that non of my family are scared of snakes I guess |

| | | Re: Huge snake!! Fourwing, have you kept the skin? Might be possible to age the animal from it. The skin does stretch a bit when they slough. This could be a really old animal.

| | | Re: Huge snake!! I am sure that the Grass Snakes I see now are smaller on average than the ones I used to catch as youngster 30 to 40 years ago but it may be that I was just smaller then.
Looked up my copy of Collins Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Britain and Europe and found this ‘Usually up to 120cm, including tail, often less but occasionally up to 200cm.’ that’s 6 ½ feet in old money if I have done my conversions properly. I would love to see one that size! |
