| | Toad in the Hole I have a series of holes in my garden, some are in the lawn and one or two are in the earth. They are perfectly round, about 3cm diameter and quite deep.
Not knowing what animal had made them, this weekend I had a close peer down one of these holes and there were two eyes staring back at me!. Its a frog or a toad - can't tell which yet as its being very shy, but its been sitting down there for a few days now.
I always have a fair number of frogs and toads in the garden. Even though I have no pond, they join me in the vegetable patch and around the mini-greenhouse. Does anyone know about these holes, is this quite normal?

| | | Re: Toad in the Hole I've never heard of toad or frogs digging their own holes like this. I have a feeling something else is doing the digging, and the toads or frogs are just taking advantage.

| | | Re: Toad in the Hole Hi maidup and welcome to WAB
Maybe the Toad or frog is using the Hole to try and find some moisture from the ground, Due to lack of rainfall and lots of sunshine so early in the year and the ground surface being so hard and very dry?

| | | Re: Toad in the Hole I spotted a hole in our garden just like the one described. My thoughts when I saw it was that someone had stuck a big stick in the grass because it was so perfectly round. It goes into the ground at an angle. I will inspect it and maybe take a photo at the weekend. I would be interested to know who made it.

Glad to hear you have the holes too, I hope you find some clues! The toad has moved out of the hole now. I saw him near the back door yesterday and moved him to the long grass.
Before I saw him sitting in the hole I too thought it was made by a mole or similar. But I have no mole hills so I know its not really that. Its exactly as you say, perfectly round,
smooth sides and the shape of a loo roll holder put into the ground at an angle.
I did see on a website that to make the perfect home for a toad, you should create a space inside a mound (of rocks say) and leave a tube for the toad to crawl though. So maybe he does like holes and did dig it for himself?

| | | Re: Toad in the Hole I have similar holes in an area of lawn (rough grass OK!!!) It has been suggested that Voles or Mice might be responsible for them. Also suggested that I stick something softish down them to see what happens... havent the courage lol.. might be bigger than i think!!!!
jaki
PS. My terrier doesnt pay any attention to these holes!
