I suppose the Terrapin was from some mis-guided person releasing it into the wild

I suppose the Terrapin was from some mis-guided person releasing it into the wild | Virtually every lake around London has a small number of these yankee reptiles which have been illegally released. Before their sale was banned they were popular especially with the mutant ninja turtle craze. Trouble is they grow, can be smelly + harbour pathogens like salmonella, so get dumped in the nearest waterbody. It may be illegal, but not easy to enforce!
So far there's been no direct evidence (to best of my knowledge) that they've bred in the wild in UK, but as our summers get hotter I'm sure this will happen. We've got a handful on a local nature reserve I'm involved with + they don't seem to be that much of a problem, though they can get onto grebes nests + probably take some chicks. |

It shocked me because of its size. Probably the size of a saucer!
