The first carnivorous stages of tadpoles are better at killing than their elders so, if they're hungry, then it's big brother/sister that has to go!
Possibly this is a problem of confining multiple stages in an enclosed space. In a pond the legged froglet would probably exit the pond leaving the younger ones to fight amongst themselves. Therefore you might want to create an out-of-water haven - a beach, log, plant - for the older ones?
PS: the best food for older tadpoles, unless left to their own devices, is Marmite on toast with a smidge of margerine.

And what's with the Marmite on toast idea? Goldfish pellets are a good tadpole food, roast chicken they devour pretty voraciously as well. Earthworms are good as well. |

Tadpoles can take up to 12 weeks maybe more depending on what food
is available, they will grow quick if you feed them on fish pellets and a little
bit of dog food also goes down well. (dont leave any un-eaten food in the
water for more than a couple of days.

| | | Re: Feed Tadpoles I love the idea of recycling the dead slugs as tadpole food. At the moment I enjoy feeding fish flakes to them a little every day I visit the pond. I can spend hours watching them! |

| | | Re: Feed Tadpoles as soon as the toadpoles and tadpoles were accidently introduced to my pond they cleaned the edges of the pond throughout the night and left it like how we brought the pond.
my froglets have left and i feel sad for some reason . i get attached to them. the toadpoles are still growing legs but feeding on algae. |
