| | | New Ring Flash Results
The above as described under the photo I've thrown every conceivable edit and program at ........... new ring flash set to fill-in (I think?! not mastered this yet!) silver reflector throwing abient light up, 3 image stack, fade corrected, colour boosted, sharpened, cropped even a trip in Neat Image to take the background further out (taken at f4 to get the background going out).
This image I took in the usual way of things - no flash, careful focusing to take advantage of the one third in front in focus and two thirds behind to try and get everything in plus a high f stop of f11 (I think) in natural light .... usual editing, cropping, colour boost, sharpening etc.
I would have liked too have found a coloured fungi instead of a white one for this exercise - but there was little to choose from so I made the best of it.
Anyone got any comments?!

If I'm honest I can't see much difference between either shot. But that could be down to the subject matter. I'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about.
Take care

and PS Steve - once the pic in the 'proper' Gallery comes live you will be able to see it at a larger size and the differences might be more obvious then? |

Mushroom with a message! You may need to look closely.
I'll leave you to your ring flashers, apologies for the interruption.

I like the first one best. Personal opinion but I think the key to successful use of flash is understatement - when it's beautifully lit but natural looking and the viewer can't be certain that you've used flash. I think you've achieved this here although there is just the slightest hint of it on the wet grass. When using flash for macro, fungi or insects, the foreground can be a problem. I've got loads of shots where I've had to tone down the foreground where the flash has been a bit overpowering, in order to produce a balanced exposure.
Flash aside, I prefer the softer background that f4 has given you and the only way to get that and have the whole of the fungus sharp is to focus stack.

Dave P. | Yes I hadn't considered the implication of the first stack being the nearest in focus would have the background out - maybe I should take the first shot as f4 and the others higher - wonder what result that would have?? Must try that. And yes I should have dumbed down the foliage in front and knocked the highlights out - everything was wet which made it worse. I need to get more subtle still with the ring flash - I've got it to a fine art with the flash on the camera but that puts shadows on if you're not careful ........ Mmmmm more thought and play required!! Thanks DaveP
Pauline
PS I've had another look and I think the silver reflector has caused the highlights in the grass and the top of the stipe - you can't quite tell what you're getting outside in the light - more play needed!!!
