| | | Re: Exposure setting confusion Check the histogram and ensure it's as far to the right as possible, without touching the end (and thus blowing the highlights). Modify this if there are specular highlights, such as sparkle on water. These are never going to get correct exposure without 'blocking' up all the rest of the image - so just let them 'blow'!
The reason for exposing to the right?
Half the image data is captured in the brightest stop. The next brightest stop captures half the remainder - and so on down to the darkest stop, which captures very little data. This means that if you underexpose by just one stop, you miss half the available data for the image (and two stops, three quarters of the data!). The effect of this may be shown as 'posterisation' in the shadows - where there is not enough data to show continuous tones.

| | | Re: Exposure setting confusion I think my next steps would be to.
a) reset all the cameras settings to default.
b) shoot a field of grass, fill the frame with the stuff (or something else with a neutral tone, grey card if possible) and see how that comes up.
If your still getting iffly looking exposures then perhaps the camera needs looking at.
Random thought, were you using a hood on your lens then and not now, I have seen large differences in contrast occasionally when I have forgotten a hood? just a thought.
