| | | Stereo Images Thought I'd have a quick go at seeing how easy it would be to make up a 3d image by taking two photos of the same thing at a slightly different angle. Turns out my first and only effort at this was more successful then I thought it would be. The angle of the photo doesn't really help, but if you're prepared to go cross-eyed for a wee while then you can see the basic idea is there.

| | | Re: Stereo Images Hi Ian, nice attempt there! If I could help you out the funny effect is due to two reasons - Firstly, the fly moved it's front legs between shots, although this example is quite minor. Secondly, it looks like you used a camera mounted flash for both images..? If you want to use flash ideally it has to be fixed in position to prevent each eye seeing a different source of light
Otherwise a great shot looks like spacing is correct and focus is good
Also have you downloaded stereophotomaker yet? Helps a great deal!
BTW you have started along a rather addictive path and I probably won't be long before you are looking into strapping two cameras together for better results!

| | | Re: Stereo Images Thanks for the pointers Ollyk.
It's interesting the effect the movement of the front leg actually has - it kind of looks like it's floating above the wood. I hadn't noticed that it had actually moved but I can quite clearly see it now compared with the markings on the wood.
The light source issue is really pretty obvious when you mention it - but I have to confess it never even crossed my mind at the time.
I've now downloaded the software to have a play and I'll let you know how I get on with this.
And yes, I think I've already reached the point of no return!!!
Many Thanks
Iain

| | | Re: Stereo Images Nope - it just isn't happening here and I've tried for quite a while. I have no problem with 'Magic Eye' images and going cross eyed but this just isn't working! I notice the left image is lower in the frame. Is this purposeful?
I'm sure it does work and isn't an emperors clothes situation

PS - nice that the fly co-operated

The positioning is just kind of the way I put it together with the limited knowledge I have of these things - kind of just an 'I wonder if this will work' sort of idea.
It does work for me but I think it's just one of these things that suddenly clicks into place. Until then, I guess you just stare cross-eyed at the screen waiting for something exciting to happen!!!
The fly was pretty cool about it all - until it got bored and sort of 'buzzed off'.
Cheers

Works well for me too. Gives me eye and brain ache after a while though.
Thanks, most interesting. |

| | | Re: Stereo Images Nope - still not working. First I started getting computer dry eye then the mac went to sleep!! I'll try again though Meanwhile I must get on with college stuff. It's an interesting concept and 3d is very much 'de rigueur' these days!.

| | | Re: Stereo Images Okay, I've tried again with the same technique, but this time with a flower which might be a bit easier to view. Haven't had time to play with the software yet so it's still all fairly basic field work with the single camera handheld at two different angles and back to photoshop for alignment.

| | | Re: Stereo Images Love the flower Ian - good sense of depth and makes you want to reach out and graab it - the whole point of these! The fly is much better but the flower beats it IMO..
I tend to shy away from live subjects but have done a couple - look up oliver2k on flickr for some examples somewhere near the middle of my very small portfolio. I have to admit I am not really that good considering I have been doing it for a while now and you can see movement artefacts, non-alignment and miss focus etc..- takes a LOT of time, skill and patience which I seem to be lacking atm! There are however some excellent 3ed'rs on flickr and groups of like minded folk!
Keep up with it and join those 3d flickr groups for better qualified advice and appraisal | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
