| | | Alternative light source for macro photos This article has just appeared on a photo site which I use http://www.appalachianjourney.com/pa...-and-Dance.pdf
While it is US based I think that the basics may be of interest to macro photographers worldwide.
The only problem, as far as I can see, is getting an extra pair of hand to hold the light source. Or another person. |

Like you the only problem I can see is holding the light. Wonder if it would be possible to have a bracket or adjustable clamp of some sort fitted to the tripod to hold the light source.
Just have to encourage the wife to come with me to hold the light |

| | | Re: Alternative light source for macro photos I've done both video and stills at night illuminated by a white LED light-ring to about 1-2ft - bought at the PoundShop for, naturally, £1 - bats not included. I've tested the spectral response via my spectrograph and the light-ring gives a near perfect balanced light from violet to red 400-700nm
The light-ring is designed to clamp around a parasol pole and I think would fit around the camera lens barrel quite well |

| | | Re: Alternative light source for macro photos Somehow I suspect that a bit of basic engineering to produce a bracket will work out cheaper for me in the long run than Ollie's suggestion of finding myself a wife!
Will have a look around next week to see what types of lights are available. |

| | | Re: Alternative light source for macro photos I used to ask my wife to assist me when taking macro shots. It was the worst thing I could do. She got so interested she took it up as well. It cost a small fortune kitting her out with her gear and she's now too busy taking her own shots to hold things for me
I found the answer here:- Search for plamp - Warehouse Express
It's called a Plamp (stupid name I know). It's made by Wimberley and it's ideal for holding reflecters, light sources (as long as they're not too heavy) and for holding swaying bits of vegetation still if there's a breeze.
It costs £30 so is definitely cheaper than finding a wife... |

Sounds pretty much like me and my OH. After trotting about carrying stuff I watched and listened so much I just knew I had to do it myself . Now every time the grant arrives he has to buy me something of equivalent value too
I may have got the old KM dslr but I now have one of the best old minolta lenses ever to go with a new Alpha 700 and a spon new Tamron macro etc. Plus all the other off camera lighting and his studio/lighting/light boxes etc etc.
It's definitely cheaper than a new wife who may not be as much use or as supportive as a fellow enthusuiast
'Team work, Team Work' (Al Capone in The Untouchables)
That loc line looks a bit similar to this- Shutterbug: QMM1 Macro Flash Mount System and TUMAX Twin Flash Set
I've not compared prices (or weight) yet!

Has an in-built Lithium-polymer battery, the battery can last up to 45 minutes for constant lighting when fully charged. For charging of battery, just plug into any AC Power source for charging using the adapter and cable provided.
